The Story So Far
installment 1175 of One Piece builds tension with a relentless march until delivering a grand cathartic arrival. The opening half of this week's installment is pretty laid back. Luffy, Zorry, Sanji, and the giants hang out at the base of the great tree for the duration.
It's pretty low stakes stuff after the past few weeks of grand showdowns and shouted challengers. Watching the future pirate king and his wingmen bicker about food preparation and who is the stupident lunkhead while chowing down is always a good time. It's fun seeing Gerd and Goldberg interact with them too, with bits of revealing banter entertaining the viewers between comically oversized bites.
I think the comedy beats all landed without a single misfire in the bunch. The best joke by far involved Goldberg and his shield Nash of all people (things?). The shocking revelation that Zeus the goofy cloud is some kind of legendary major Mom homie got a major chuckle out of me.
It's conceptually funny and indicative of solid comedy writing, but for me the real sell was Nash's voice performer absolutely screaming at the top of his lungs. The sheer disbelief in his voice could only come from screaming with your entire body. The second best bit was Luffy sharing a giant leg of cooked meat with Loki by haphazardly tossing it onto the prone giant's face.
It just goes to show that even when you're on Luffy's good side you might end up getting injured – the boy's kindness is inversely related to his intelligence. The mood is so good that even Loki's somber flashback can't dampen things. …of course that doesn't last for long, since we get back to the children marching towards destruction.
This was heart-wrenching to watch. On its face it's simple color logic – keep showing the giant glowing red fire, watch the kids plod mindlessly towards their doom. Despite its simplicity, the tremendous sense of relief that comes from seeing the glowing blue wave of Jinbei's shoulder throw douse the flames was very real.
It's always great seeing the oft-forgotten Straw hats like Jinbei get to shine in the spotlight with their unique talents to the cheers and adoration of all. This rugged simplicity and fan-service is paired with some truly smart cinematography. The agonizing pov shot from Saul's wrist where his hand fills the frame and the children walk away is beautiful while at the same time letting the viewers stew in Saul's helplessness first hand.
Similarly, the tracking shot where the camera is backing up through the children as they walked is a really brilliant bit of filmmaking, one that is really only possible in animation in the best way.
