Reviews are pouring in for You and I Are Polar Opposites Season 2 ‒ Episode 8, and the verdict is splitting audiences and critics alike. From the performances to the direction, here is a closer look at what the film does right — and where it stumbles.

The Story So Far

Yamada and Nishi are the first of the pairings to take the spotlight this week, and the two of them are still very much in the middle of getting a handle on their fresh relationship. Nishi concludes up making a last-minute trip to Yamada's house on a rainy day, and even though we've seen them in the background here and there, it's still hilarious to see just how much Yamada's mother and sister are near-perfect female clones of him, with all three sharing the same carefree attitude towards life.

Seeing how little of a filter exists between how Yamada acts at school and how he acts at home does make Nishi a bit anxious considering she still hasn't even explained her parents she has a boyfriend, but that nervousness is mostly played for laughs here as the poor girl can barely go more than five seconds without exploding from embarrassment at being in Yamada's home.

That only makes the situation even more awkward when Yamada tries to set the mood for a kiss, only for Nishi to nearly have a stroke thinking about it, but seeing how earnest Yamada is makes her want to get across how much she loves him, and she psychs herself up just long enough to kiss him before immediately heading home.

It's extremely adorable, and while Nishi might be a long way off from being as confident as she wants to be, it's at least good that she can recognize how much being around Yamada is making her a little bolder. Meanwhile, Miyu and Tani are actually about where we left them last week, as with the seasons passing and both of them preparing for entrance exams, they've found themselves with less time to spend together.

That growing distance mostly serves as an excuse for the two of them to go on their second summer festival date, and much like the first one, what their date lacks in laugh out loud gags, it generally makes up for with funny confronts, and seeing Miyu literally soak up Tani's presence like a battery was an especially inspired by of visual humor in an installment chock full of wacky expressions.

That said, the installment also doesn't shy away from exploring Miyu's increasing uncertainty regarding what her future career could be, and although she's not exactly depressed about it, the fact that Tani's already locked down his career track makes her a little envious. That fear is understandable, but as Tani correctly points out to her, it's not quite the end of the world if she hasn't locked down her life's path before leaving high school, and using her time in college to check out different career options just means she'll have more opportunities to find what's right for her.

We can also see from Tani's perspective that having a career choice locked down that early doesn't exactly mean it's the right one, as he's only ever really wanted to be a schoolteacher because his dad was one, and he never really stopped to consider that he could have other options.
