Entertainment headlines have a new entry this week, and Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You ‒ Episode 7 is generating real conversation. Here is everything you need to know about the story that everyone is talking about.
The Story So Far
A more casual and light hearted installment after last week's health scare, installment seven of Smoking Behind the Supermarket with You turns the focus of the show back to the daily stressors of these characters' lives and the moments of fun and intrigue they manage to make between them. Even if this is a bit less emotionally affecting than the previous installment, it's still fun and has me reflecting on my own past work experience and what events might define my summer as it kicks off to come to a close.
To open this installment, Tayama/Yamada is up for a raise! …which apparently means that she has to take a corporate mandated exam to prove that she's qualified for the pay bump. While I knew that competency exams were a thing in some sectors during the hiring process, I did not realize that exams for promotions or even just salary increases were a thing!
So now, next time I'm in-office, I'm going to ask my coworkers who have lived in Japan just how common this is over there. Disregarding my surprise and curiosity at the inciting event for this installment, Tayama/Yamada of course passes her exam with some encouragement from Sasaki who in turn got a spirit boosting talisman from the young woman's punk persona.
This opening half of the installment is pretty well-worn territory for Supermarket Smoking, but it's still cute and reminded me of the only raise I ever got working a counter gig, that being when I worked expo at Eris Brewery and Cider House (not a sponsor, they're just a good business and you should go patronize them if you're in the Chicagoland area!).
The back half of this installment kicks off with Tayama/Yamada hearing a rumor about a ghost haunting the back of the supermarket where she and Sasaki smoke. While she initially tries to use this information to get a rise out of Sasaki (while also being more unnerved by the rumor than she'd ever admit) but he's pretty nonchalant about the news as he's an overworked adult with bigger things to worry about.
The ghost turns out to be a dog that Goto is looking after and, after feeling embarrassed by being so vulnerable in front of Sasaki, Tayama/Yamada later “gets back at him” with a squirt gun fight that adds some levity to his work defined summer. While this installment isn't expanding the scope of the show by any means, it is making me consider my own life and looks better than I've come to expect while doing so!
There's a surprising amount of detail, color contrast, and expressivity in Tayama/Yamada reactions in this installment, and I appreciate the team going above and beyond in this regard. This installment won't be the highlight of the run, but sure to help everyone who watches it get through these dog days of summer.
