The Story So Far

Add as a preferred source on Google filmmaker and performer Tannishtha Chatterjee’s Full Plate brought the 17th edition of the Indian movie Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) 2026 to a close on August 23. Starring Kirti Kulhari in the lead, the movie was screened as the festival’s Closing Night presentation. Lead performer Sharib Hashmi was also present at the event to introduce the movie to Australian audiences.

Full Plate revolves around a homemaker with a natural talent for cooking, for whom food gradually becomes a means of expressing her identity. Set against the expectations of family and society, the movie explores themes of individuality, patriarchy and the choices women make while trying to find their own voice. For Tannishtha Chatterjee, the movie’s selection as the Closing Night presentation carried special significance.

The screening marked an important moment in the movie’s IFFM journey while continuing the conversations around identity, individuality and personal choice that form the core of the narrative. Festival filmmaker Mitu Bhowmick Lange said, “IFFM has always tried to create a space where different kinds of Indian stories can find an viewers, and Full Plate is a movie that fits beautifully into that spirit.

Tannishtha has approached a familiar world with a very personal perspective, and the movie opens up conversations around women, family, identity and the expectations placed on them. It felt right to have Full Plate as part of our Closing Night because we wanted to end the festival with a movie that stays with the viewers even after the screening is over.

We were very happy to bring Tannishtha’s work and Kirti’s turn to our Melbourne viewers.” With its exploration of a woman’s everyday experiences and her efforts to reclaim her individuality, Full Plate provided a fitting conclusion to IFFM 2026. The festival featured more than 130 captures spanning 36 languages, continuing its focus on bringing stories from different parts of India and the Indian diaspora to audiences in Melbourne.
