The Story So Far

The rank outlandishness of the scenario, along with the uncertainty of how official a girlfriend Yaku will be (down to the aforementioned secrecy), leads to an installment with some interesting back-and-forth. In theory, the rules of the series are set; the heart-crack means the romance between Rentaro and this part has to proceed, and Yaku even seemingly decides to go along with it relatively early in the meeting.

And hey, grandpa died years ago, so she's single (not that preceding partners stopped anyone else in this show). But even then, throughout Yaku and Rentaro's interactions, there's that sense of… A lot of it is Yaku's age and experience.

She's seen and been through so much; a situation like this doesn't faze her nearly as much as it does Rentaro or the people playing along at home. That idea of their time spent together being a mere humoring dalliance that won't actually go anywhere eventually filters down to the characters themselves. Rentaro realizes that Yaku isn't taking him or his romance seriously, and how could she?

It informs the most interesting element of the installment. After two-and-a-half seasons of Rentaro succeeding by being the bestest boyfriend who could ever exist, he finally crosses a paramourous barricade he can't scale. Turns out even he has his limits.

To be sure, Yaku is very sweet, and Rentaro does naturally get on well with her. But it's distinctive to see this relationship coming from Rentaro's side as he tries to romance his fresh golden-years girlfriend only to successful that wall. Even as he puts on a bad-boy affect, she's utterly impervious to him, though it's not like 'bad' Rentaro is something he's especially good at either.

Nor is there any component of part development he can help Yaku past like the others—she's already lived and grown enough for a lifetime! Instead, Yaku's place is to help Rentaro realize his own amount of growing he still has to do. He's young and in love with plenty of girls his own age (relatively speaking).

If Yaku's connection with him is almost more of a mentorly position, that's fair. As she shares, she already experienced true romance in her youth, so maybe now she's ready for 'a different kind of love.' I also think this is a place that a lot of forthcoming girlfriends out of the 100 could go. Regular romance in all its flavors is the focus of this series, of course, but through some of its other, inter-girlfriend connections, 100 Girlfriends has shown how the different degrees of love within a full family/polycule can resonate.

Yaku feels something for Rentaro in all his efforts, so she resolves to go along with him for now. The way she puts it almost makes it seem like she'll be a girlfriend-in-waiting, not yet formally pointed out to the rooftop hoard of haremettes— No, wait, never mind, there she is with everyone up there after all.
